Business Tips from a Biblical Worldview

The Standard of Excellence

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17 NIV)

Increasingly, business competitors are forming trade organizations to promote the welfare of their industry. One of the key functions of a trade organization is to establish standards. Members of the trade organization are then challenged to live up to its standards.

An ethics standard is one of the common standards adopted by many trade organizations. Generally, ethics standards embrace such values as honesty, fair dealings, lawfulness, integrity, improvement, and so forth. Companies that truly practice these values prosper.

These values are biblical values, as a person might expect. In fact, they are values that are reflective of Christ, which is why the values are so powerful.

In Colossians 3:17 (see above), the apostle Paul gave us a mandate for business standards. Note the word translated deeds. This word is the Greek word ergon, which refers to all types of work. Paul was saying that whatever you say or do in life, including work, should reflect the values that Christ embraced. In other words, we should be incarnating Christ’s values.

Here is your business tip: Go to your local office supply store and buy a stamp that reads “in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Carry that stamp with you. Then everything that you say and do, figuratively stamp the work product with those words. Imagine the impact of looking at your work product and seeing the words in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Practicing this tip will take you and your work to new levels of excellence and success.
