Developing a successful career is challenging. Whether you are a business owner or an employee, there are obstacles at every turn. Hence, everyone needs wisdom to discern the intricacies of career management.
A pattern or a model to follow is a wonderful tool. Somewhere on life’s journey, we tend to find people whom we want to emulate. These people command our respect. We study their lives—what they do and how they do it. We do our best to incorporate their practices and principles into our lives and believe that success will ensue.
The apostle Paul confirmed the value of modeling life after people of principle. In the text above, he exhorted Christians to take note of how he lived and to ”live according to the pattern we gave you.” In other words, Paul was saying to live according to the biblical principles that he embraced.
One of the key scriptural principles is that God creates every person for a purpose; hence, to be successful, you must find your divinely ordained life purpose, which includes your divinely ordained career. But how do you do that?
Scripture gives us a wonderful principle as a pattern, which I have labeled “C4.” C4 stands for calling, character, capability, and commissioning. When you find a career that you have C4 to do, you will be a success.
Here is your business tip: Make it a life long goal to find the work that God created you to do. Don’t let anything get in the way including money. If you believe that success in life is defined by obedience to God, find and do your C4 work. This is how you build a successful career.
This month I am pleased to offer a special presentation of the C4 principle by my friend Stu Schlackman. This message was given at the baccalaureate service for Dallas Christian College in May 2008. Enjoy!
