Work: Obedience, Growth, and Prosperity

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. (Psalms 1:1–3 NIV)

What is the key to prosperity?

In a created universe, the key to prosperity must be to wisely utilize the principles of the universe. This means that a person must know the principles of the universe. Some of these principles can be discerned heuristically through “general revelation” (the revelation of God in creation). But the most reliable source is “special revelation” (the revelation of God—the Creator—found in Scripture).

In the above text, special revelation is called the “law of the Lord.” At the time the book of Psalms was written, Israel was under the Mosaic Law. The majority of Scripture at that time had to do with the Mosaic Law; therefore it is not surprising that the psalmist would use the term “law of the Lord” to refer to Scripture.

Psalms 1 gives the prescription for prospering in God’s universe: delighting and meditating on Scripture. This may seem strange if you view business as an activity that takes place solely in the natural world. But if you recognize that business is a physical manifestation of underlying spiritual reality, then to prosper in the natural, a person must prosper in the spiritual. Spiritual prosperity is rooted in understanding and aligning with God’s revelation given in Scripture.

Therefore, if you wish to prosper in your personal life, marriage and family life, work life, church life, and community life, you must delight in and meditate on the Scripture so that you can align with the will and ways of God. Then you will be “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.” Consequently, whatever you do will prosper.

Here is your business tip. To operate a profitable organization, the organization must first be based on biblical principles. The organization’s management team and its workers must be wise, faithful, diligent students of Scripture. They must receive teaching by godly people in order to mature and grow in their understanding of Scripture. This will enable the organization to align with the will and ways of God and therefore prosper. The tangible evidence of true prosperity is an organization that grows at a healthy pace, enjoys favor in the delivery of its value proposition, develops a stable life-giving culture, builds an outstanding reputation, and reaps financial profit.
