Attitudes That Transform the Workplace

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. (Colossians 1:21 NIV)

Given the reality of evil in the universe, the consequences of evil will surely manifest in the workplace. Few would doubt the reality of theft, fraud, bait and switch tactics, embezzlement, white-collar crime, and Ponzi schemes. These all negatively impact business through inefficiency, increased security costs, and financial loss.

As a maxim, most people want to buy quality products and services from reputable organizations at the lowest price possible. Another way to express this is high quality at low cost.

Given the evil in the culture and indeed in every organization, how does an organization deliver high quality at low cost? The key is in the right attitude. But since human beings are inherently evil by virtue of the fall of man (Genesis 3), how can man have the right attitude? To have the right attitude, man needs to be transformed.

To help understand the requisite transformation, consider the above text. The apostle Paul presents a foundational truth: your behavior reveals your attitude—your mind-set or worldview. The word translated behavior is the Greek word ergon, which is the general word for work. Paul said that your work reveals your worldview, which implies that your work is driven by your worldview. Consequently, to produce good work (the opposite of evil work) requires a transformed worldview in people. A transformed worldview is a worldview that is aligned with the will and ways of God.

Everyone has a worldview, a system of thinking that drives how he or she works. Because of the reality of “in the beginning God” (Genesis 1:1), there is nothing prior to God. God is the seminal starting point for all true wisdom and knowledge. This means that your worldview is rooted in your view of God. And your worldview defines your view of truth and reality. Therefore your personal value proposition flows from your worldview. And the value proposition of any organization flows from the confluence of the worldviews of the people in the organization.

When worldviews of the people in an organization are aligned with how God made the universe to function, there will be efficiency and effectiveness in producing the organization’s products or services. Therefore to produce quality products or services at a low cost requires a sound view of God and consequently a sound worldview to be operative in the individuals of an organization.

Here is your business tip. It should be the aim of every organization to deliver quality products or services at a low cost. This requires efficiency at every level in the organization. Efficiency is a by-product of people living based on a biblically sound worldview. Therefore management must work diligently to train workers in a biblical worldview. Workers must be willing to learn how to think and live biblically. Workers who are unwilling to be biblically trained will be impediments to the organization's efforts to efficiently produce quality goods and services. Management must encourage workers to grow in a biblical worldview and cannot long tolerate resistance to this growth.
