The Principle of Equal Yoking

by Gerald R. Chester, Ph.D.

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV)

One of the key biblical principles for building organizations is the principle of equal yoking. This maxim is most clearly articulated by the apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 6 (see above). In this text, Paul defended himself against the attack of false apostles who tried to discredit him and his work. His defense was based, in part, on his equally yoked relationship with the Corinthian Christians.

Equal yoking is commonly applied to marriage, but the principle has broad application, including in the context of organizational leadership and management.

Combining equal yoking with the C4 principle,1 provides a powerful tool for building effective teams. The starting point is building a C4 senior leadership team, then building every division, department, and group throughout the organization with C4 workers. An organization built on these principles will be highly effective and efficient, and will build an excellent reputation. Morale will be high, turnover will be low, the best people will want to work for the organization, and the organization will be profitable.

Building an organization using the principles of equal yoking and C4 requires time and patience. Finding C4 people is not easy. The building process requires an equally yoked senior leadership team commited to these principles. The seminal traits of such a leadership team are unity of worldview, heart, and vision. In addition, there must be mutual trust and a common definition of success based on obedience to the will and ways of God. A leadership team that displays these traits must then transfer these qualities to everyone in the organization.

An equally yoked leadership team will build equally yoked teams within the organization. Each team will consist of the right people in the right places doing the right things serving the right people for the right reasons. When this happens, the organization will deliver an excellent value proposition—one that exceeds the common slogan—on-time, on-scope, and on-budget. The organization will function as a well-honed team that will be highly respected and will bring honor to God.

Leading organizations that function at this level of excellence is very challenging but a great delight. It requires partnering with Jesus by obeying his principles. In the end, the reward will be the joy of building with Jesus as expressed in his words: “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light."2

Here is your business tip. Wise senior leaders will seek to build organizations using the principles of equal yoking and C4. These principles will enable an organization to build an excellent workforce and organize effective teams that deliver world-class value to its customers and clients. Organizations that function at this level will enjoy internal harmony and an outstanding reputation plus enduring success and profitability.
