Business Tips from a Christian Worldview

Jesus and the Good News

Gerald R. Chester, Ph.D.

He said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose." (Luke 4:43 ESV)

How did Jesus view his own message, which he called the good news of the kingdom of God? Jesus’ view included the following basic elements:

  • Restoring his (Jesus’) uncontested rule over creation. At the fall of man, God’s rule was not lost, but it became contested. Jesus came as part of God’s purpose to restore his uncontested rule (Acts 2:34–35).
  • Providing a basis for forgiveness of sin. The sin of man was imputed to Jesus at his death and the righteousness of God was imputed to man through regeneration. Imputation means that Jesus did not actually sin himself; rather, man’s sin was placed on Jesus as if he were the scapegoat. And likewise, through regeneration a person is not actually righteous but rather deemed to possess the righteousness of Jesus. This truth is an expression of love and grace—a gift from God that cannot be bought or earned through human effort.
  • Preparing a people of God. In the Old Testament, the people of God (ekklesia) was Israel. The word ekklesia is used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint [LXX]) in reference to the people of God. The word means “called out to rule.” Jesus used the same Greek word to speak of his work through his disciples, that is, to build an ekklesia, the New Testament people of God (Matthew 16:18). Today, ekklesia is commonly translated church.
  • Clarifying the physical and spiritual aspects of the kingdom of God. Jesus’ view of the good news of the kingdom of God contained both spiritual and physical aspects. Both aspects are redemptive. Spiritually, there was the salvation process that redeemed mankind and physically there will be a redemption of the material order of creation. While the redemptive process is progressive, all will be fulfilled at the culmination of the metanarrative and final judgment. According to Revelation 20:5, 11–15, there will be a final judgment. All humans will be resurrected and will give an account of their works. All will be found unworthy and sentenced to eternal death in the lake of fire. Only those whose names are written in the Book of Life will be exempted from this final judgment. Only the names of the true people of God will be in the Book of Life. Paul spoke of his fellow workers with assurance that their names are in the Book of Life (Philippians 4:3). Then after the final judgment, there will be a new creation where Jesus will dwell and his ekklesia will be with him (Revelation 21−22). His rule will be uncontested. Since his ascension, he has been waiting for the Father to complete the metanarrative of redemption (Acts 2:34–35). And until the end, the ekklesia will work to lay the groundwork for Jesus' second advent.

The above is a summary of the good news of the kingdom of God. This is essential metanarrative truth to facilitate building successful organizations in God’s universe.

Here is your business tip. Wise organizational leaders understand that they are building organizations in the context of what God is doing in his metanarrative. Therefore, organizations must reflect the will and ways of God as well as the purpose of God. To do this well, leaders must discern the right value proposition and find the right people to deliver the value proposition. The idea of right means that which is aligned with the plan and purpose of God, who has a reason for the existence of everything. There is no other licit reason for the existence of organizations except to serve God’s purpose. This requires leadership grounded in a Christian worldview to deliver the value proposition ordained by God.
